Tolerance, despair

"In the world it is called Tolerance, but in hell it is called Despair. . . . the sin that believes in nothing, cares for nothing, seeks to know nothing, interferes with nothing, enjoys nothing, hates nothing, finds purpose in nothing, lives for nothing, and remains alive because there is nothing for which it will die."

Dorothy Sayers, quoted in D. A. Carson, The Gagging of God, page 53.

Well, I just thank you for one post, and now I'm thanking you for another one! :-) This quote really speaks to me right now, as I was recently harshly verbally attacked by a non-Christian for being unwilling to say that the Bible *might* be wrong in its central claims.

To the non-Christian in question, this is what he believes "tolerance" to mean-- not only listening to one's ideas and well, *tolerating* them, but also being willing to admit that those ideas might be right.

When I wouldn't say to him that he might be right (and the Bible wrong) in his agnosticism, he said that I was a narrow-minded bigot. The fact that I listened to and engaged him and his ideas, attempting to answer him and them for over a month, made no difference.

What the world calls "tolerance" is often actually postmodern relativism-- and Biblically speaking, one is either with Jesus or against Him. *True* tolerance isn't incompatible with Christianity, but many peoples' *ideas* of tolerance are incompatible with the claims of Christ.
